Melissa is a freelance pianist based in Birmingham and is Co-Founder and Artistic Director at Room Art.
Melissa graduated from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a 1st class honours degree in 2005 and was awarded Distinction LRSM for piano performance the same year.
Following an Erasmus Programme of study at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar, Germany she was awarded the Weingarten Scholarship and spent a year studying at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest following which, she returned to Birmingham to complete her Masters achieving Commendation in 2008.
Since graduation, Melissa has been active as a classical recitalist, whilst working freelance playing for projects with Birmingham Royal Ballet, CBSO, DanceXchange, Elmhurst School for Dance as well as local community based choirs such as Midlands Hospital Choir. Melissa is active in the community and has been busy working with Birmingham Opera Company delivering workshops across Birmingham for charities who support various groups such as homeless, refugees, women in crises and youth. Melissa is passionate about sharing the joy of music and teaches at amongst others, Royal Birmingham Junior Conservatoire.
As a culmination of artistic interests, experience and expertise, Melissa co-founded Room Art. Room Art is an Art Gallery and Music Venue within her home, the success of which has led to commissions and projects further afield which embrace her passion for the diversity of, and interrelation of the arts. Recent projects have included a commission by The Pod, Coventry, for a major theatre work as part of Scratch the Surface - DIALOGUE, Mental Health Arts Festival 2017, which premiered in October 2017 at Warwick Arts Centre. This piece “Incidental” brings together 11 musicians onstage, 4 artists and works with Autin Dance Theatre to deliver an interrelated arts theatre piece which aims to communicate human experience in a relatable and beautiful way, to inspire and engage its audience.
Melissa is also working in collaboration with Vanhulle Dance Theatre on themes of female empowerment through music and dance and most recently premiered the piece “Yin” at the Arena Theatre Wolverhampton, 2020. Previous pieces have included “Storm” which premiered at DoNation UK: 'Fashion for a Cause' Fashion and Business Expo. Birmingham, November 2017 and the piece “Half Light” a Room Art commission for Vanhulle Dance Theatre, with music composed by Melissa and performed with EIF. Recent performing work has been in the cross over genre of classical piano with electronics and work with sound artists EIF. She has also collaborated on a physical theatre piece under the direction of Daniel Piaszczyk, which premiered at the Arena Theatre Wolverhampton 2016 involving live solo improvisation for the duration of the piece.
